Venerable Shravasti Dhammika is a distinguished lecturer and Buddhist monk originally from Australia.
He was born in Australia in 1951 into a Christian family and converted to Buddhism at the age of 18. In 1973, he traveled to Thailand with the intention of becoming a monk, but he was not impressed by what he encountered in the monasteries there. He then went on to Laos, Burma (Myanmar), and eventually India. Over the next three years, he traveled throughout India, studying yoga and meditation, until he finally received ordination under the guidance of Venerable Matiwella Sangharatna, the last disciple of Anagarika Dharmapala.
In 1976, he moved to Sri Lanka, where he studied the Pali language at Sri Lanka Vidyalaya. He later became one of the co-founders and a teacher at the Nilambe Meditation Centre in Kandy. Since then, he has spent most of his life in Sri Lanka and Singapore.
Bhante Dhammika, as he is known to his students and friends, has written over 25 books and numerous articles on Buddhism and related subjects. He is also well known for his public lectures and represented Theravāda Buddhism at the Millennium World Buddhist Conference in Berlin in 2000.
In addition to Buddhist philosophy and meditation, Bhante Dhammika has a keen interest in the historical topography of Buddhism and the phenomenon of pilgrimage, and he has undertaken many journeys throughout India and other Buddhist countries. His other interests include the history of India, art, and botany.
